Chippy Finder is an independent guide to the UK's best fish & chip shops. We started it because every "best fish and chips in [town]" list we found online was either a thinly disguised advertisement, a chain-store roundup, or the same five seaside tourist traps recycled year after year. We wanted something better — a directory built by people who actually queue up on a Friday night.

What "proper" means to us

A proper chippy fries fresh fish in clean oil, hand-cuts its chips from real potatoes, and treats batter as a craft rather than an afterthought. In practice that means independent shops with a named fish supplier, chips cut on site, and friers who can tell you what came in off the boat that morning without checking a spreadsheet.

How shops make the list

We start with a wide net — every fish & chip shop Google Places knows about — and then we filter aggressively. Shops are classified by what they actually serve (sit-down restaurants, takeaway-only, seaside classics, mobile fryers, chains) using a combination of structured review data, on-site signals from each shop's website, and editor review. Anything that reads like a generic café, a kebab-shop sideline, or a frozen-fish reheating outfit gets removed.

Editorial independence

We don't accept payment to add a shop, change a rating, or move a listing up the page. Sponsored placements — when they exist — are always clearly labelled as Sponsored and never affect the curated list. Display advertising on the site funds hosting and data costs; ad revenue plays no role in editorial decisions.

Who runs it

Chippy Finder is a small editorial project run by a fish-and-chips obsessive who has spent years driving up and down the British coast in pursuit of the perfect portion.
